Procedure of Magnetic Resonance Imaging

A painless Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI) scan will take 15 to 90 minutes but, it is depending on the size of area that going to be scanned and total number of images being taken.

PRE-EXAMINATION

1.      Medical history and health must be fill in a questionnaire.
2.      After completed the questionnaire, you will be asked to signed consent as a step to scan continue with MRI scan.
3.      Take off all metal object from your body such as watches, jewellery, aid for hearing and dentures.
4.      You must wear specific hospital gown in this procedure. If not, wear a cloth without metal zips, buttons, underwire and belts.

DURING EXAMINATION

1.      Prepare to lie on motorized bed that will move inside the scanner. It depend on part of body you going to scan you will enter first either feet or head.
2.      The scanner operated by a computer, which located in a different room. The radiographer operates the computer, so they will be in separated room from you. However, you can talk through an intercom with them and they will observe you all the times through a television.
3.      To avoid blurred images, you must keep still part of body that going to be scan in a long period until the picture of that part of body scanned can snap very well. A single scan may take a few seconds. You may be asked to hold your breath during short scans.

POST-EXAMINATION

1.      An MRI scan usually carried out as an outpatient procedure. Therefore, you do not need to stay in hospital overnight. After the scan, you can resume normal activities immediately.
2.      Your MRI scan needs to be studied by radiologist and possibly discussed with other specialists. This means you will not know your results of your scan immediately.
